A Small Team With a Big Heart

A Long Road Home Inc. was founded in 2012 with a simple mission: to give abandoned dogs a second chance. We are a small, independent, all-volunteer organization with no paid staff and no physical shelter.

Every dog we rescue is placed in a loving foster home until they find their forever family. We focus on dogs that have been overlooked at municipal shelters — seniors, special-needs dogs, and those who have been waiting the longest.

Happy Tails

Every adoption is a celebration. Here's what our adopters have to say about their forever friends.

Ruby

"When we adopted her almost 4 years ago, my husband knelt down to pet her and she put her paws on his shoulders and hugged him. That was it — the rest, they say, is history. She adds so much love and fun to our family."

Sweetie

"My 7-year-old was afraid of dogs. But they found the most perfect dog for our family — Sweetie is my son's best friend now. My entire family loves her. I'm so impressed with the work they do that I've donated several times."

Wendy & Family

Adopted Sweetie, Black Lab Mix

Magnolia (formerly Honey)

"Three years ago I brought home the love of my life. Thank you to her foster mom for all the love and care she gave her. Magnolia is my girl — here she is playing on the beach in the Hamptons. 3 years of love, fun & friendship!"

Tricia

Adopted Magnolia (formerly Honey)

Duke

"We adopted Duke at 9 months old — he was house-broken and perfectly balanced! They guided us to find the perfect dog based on our lifestyle as runners. With daily walks and play, he has proven to be a constant source of joy."

Ashley

Adopted Duke, Hound Mix

Molly

"I fell in love the moment I met Molly. The foster family cared for her like their own. The home visit, the reference check — everything showed how seriously they take every placement. We loved the group so much, my sister and brother have since adopted too."

Peggy

Adopted Molly, Corgi/Jack Russell Mix

Rue

"We drove 4.5 hours each way from Massachusetts to adopt Rue. I can assure you we would not have made that drive unless we felt completely comfortable. She is sweet, loving and great with our two sons — exactly as described."

Our Story

A small team with a big heart, dedicated to giving every dog a second chance at life.

How It All Started

A Long Road Home Inc. was founded in 2012 by a group of passionate animal lovers in Nassau County, New York. What began as a small effort to save a few dogs from overcrowded municipal shelters has grown into a dedicated network of volunteers, foster families, and supporters.

These are the dogs that need us most, and we refuse to give up on them.

Our Mission & Values

Every decision we make is guided by our commitment to the dogs we serve.

To rescue abandoned and sometimes abused or handicapped dogs from municipal shelters that have not been adopted — giving them the medical care, love, and dignity they deserve while finding them responsible, loving forever homes.

Compassion First

Every dog deserves love, regardless of age, breed, or medical condition.

Transparency

We are open about our finances, operations, and each dog's history.

Foster-Based Care

Every dog lives in a real home, not a kennel, until adoption.

Community

We build lasting relationships with adopters, fosters, and volunteers.

Our Foster-Based Model

Unlike traditional shelters, we don't have a physical facility. Every dog goes directly into a loving foster home.

Why Foster-Based Works

Our network of dedicated foster families opens their hearts and homes to dogs in need, providing a safe haven while we work to find the perfect forever match.

This model allows us to truly understand each dog's personality and needs. Dogs in foster homes receive individualized attention, medical care, and behavioral support — setting them up for success in their adoptive homes.

It's a community effort, and it works. Since 2012, we've placed over 500 dogs in loving homes thanks to our incredible foster network.

Become a Foster Hero

Open your home and heart to a dog in need. We cover all expenses — you provide the love.

Why Foster?

Fostering is one of the most impactful ways you can help save lives. By opening your home temporarily to a dog in need, you're making room in shelters for another dog to be rescued.

We cover all expenses: veterinary care, food, supplies, and any medications. You provide the love, safety, and daily care.

Foster periods typically range from a few weeks to a few months, depending on the dog's needs and how quickly they find their forever home.
